I passed! I didn’t get any points off either (a few others managed the same). I’m really pumped. It may be a while before I actually get a bike, but I’m really glad I did this and I really strongly recommend it to everyone.

I sat on an MT07 yesterday. Even though the tank seemed unusually wide, it’s still at the top of my list so far.

They also had a speed triple and it was gorgeous, but I didn’t know they had that much power. Seems like a little much for a first bike. Oh well

Honestly, almost any bike will be fast when you start out. You’d be surprised how fast 50mph feels the first time you’re in traffic. MT-07 isn’t a bad choice. Definitely buy used if you go that route though. I’d also look into older Suzuki GS500 or if you want newer - honda CB500F or CB500R. Ninja 250 is cheap, and 250 dual sports are also cheap.

True that. My first bike was a ‘79 CM185. I grew up riding quads in the desert, but 35 mph on a city street was a bit unnerving at first.

Awesome, gear up and have fun!

I started on a 13 Ninja 1k, waaaaaay too much for a first bike, but hey, you only live once.

Welcome to the world of two wheels! Have FUN!

I started riding in my early 30s. A 700cc 4-pot is a terrible idea for a first bike. I made that mistake and I’ll impart some knowledge in case you’d like to learn from my mistake.

If you’re young and dumb, it’s got more power than you have experience and you’ll kill yourself before you progress as a rider .

If you’re older and more careful, you’ll stay alive but you’ll be so busy trying not to kill yourself that you won’t progress as a rider.

I’m totally in the tank for Honda, so keep that in mind when I recommend either a CB300F or a CB500F. If you live in a city and just need to get around in town and don’t need highway capability, you can’t have more fun than a Grom. It’s got limited utility but if it fits your use case, they’re fantastic. I had one for several years to get around out at the race track where I used to work.

If you don’t like Honda, find the equivalent bike in another brand .

I’m pretty risk averse. The MT07 is a twin parallel like the cb500f, but with about 20 more hp.

I hadn't considered the cb500f though so I will definitely check it out. It looks like it weighs more than the MT07 though. I wish somebody made a 50hp 500cc that weighed under 400lbs.

YAY! One of us! One of us!

I’ll take a different swing than the others. Feel free to get the MT07, but I’d also pick up an old 500cc or fewer used “beater bike” to learn on. That’s kinda what I did with my Buell and Rebel. The Buell was my baby while the Rebel was the bike that I refined my skills with. Besides, you may come to love slow bike fast!

In the end I ended up selling both but I’m happy I didn’t put all my eggs into a bike I’d cry about if I dropped it.

Oh! I didn’t realize it was a twin. Still, 20 more horse is a lot on a bike.

I had a CB500F for a while (my second bike after a high strung Triumph ) and I was a LOT more comfortable riding it, I just wasn’t riding it enough. I rode my Grom pretty much every day though. Right now I’m bike-less but if the company I work for moves and work ends up being 5 miles away instead of 25 miles, I’ll probably get another Grom.

If you start on less than a 1000cc your not a real rider.

Just kidding. Start small. I started on an older suzuki gs500. I quickly outgrew it but glad i didnt just jump onto my sv650 i have now.

Speed Triple or Street Triple?

If you looked at a Speed Triple then oh,yesthatistoomuchbikeforyourfirstone. A street triple is probably still a little much, but at least it isn’t as insane.

MT07 is a good starter bike. Safety features, reasonable power and weight, good brakes and handling , but not so small you’ll be bored with it in a year. It is faster than most starter bikes and needs to be respected, but it's not something you should avoid. I’ve got a friend who has one, it was his first bike. Here’s had it for a few years and is only thinking about getting something else because he wants something with more style, like a Bonneville.

A wesome! Someone else mentioned it to me and it was probably the best advice I received. Stay hydrated. I drank about four 16 oz. Bottles of water in one afternoon and my body used every ou nce of it. It was super sunny in Atlanta but either way the bikes and the helmets seemed to suck the water right out of me.
